Makiyah Michelle has always aimed for the stars. She began content creation on YouTube at the age of 11 years old. As a child, she wasn’t sure about what career she wanted. Though, she knew that she loved entertainment and the arts as it suits her big personality.
As time went on, Makiyah began to study nursing in college. She is inspired by her mother and father who work in the medical field. She wants to pursue aesthetic nursing as it involves cosmetic procedures which aligns with her passion for beauty. On social media, she has a mass following of fashion and makeup lovers. It can be tough to handle college and beauty influencing at the same time but Makiyah knows how to make it work. She expresses “I am a human first, student second.” She nurtures her mental health consistently for clarity, focus, and peace.
Makiyah does not view beauty influencing as job but a passion. While being a college student, it is an outlet for her. She thrives off of her supportive community. She states “I always want to fill the cup of the people watching me as much as they fill my cup.” When women tell her how much she inspires them, it makes her feel that she is following her path for “a bigger reason.” She gives back the love as much as she receives. Along with her education, she states “my degree will forever be a symbol of the dedication and discipline,” that she put in while following her journey. Makiyah has been larger than life since she was a little girl. The younger version of herself inspires her womanhood dreams.
Makiyah has faced some barriers as a content creator. Algorithms are not always curated for the success of Black women or women of color. She emphasizes that she has been “lowballed” by brands but she combats this by the big word “no.” She deserves to be paid and promote great quality products as anyone else. The relationship that she has with her followers is important to her. She knows her worth and will never settle for less.
One thing that Makiyah actively works on is improving fears of failure. She invents the motto “just do it scared.” She aims to push herself out of her comfort zone. She wants women to realize “they have so much potential oozing out of them.” She does not want them to let fears of failure stop them from being a better version of themselves.
As a little girl, Makiyah learned “the way people treat you is a reflection of themselves and not you.” During her early YouTube days, she would receive hate comments especially from peers. She did not let the comments break her confidence in fear that her parents would notice and take away her socials. She had to keep her head held high and lead herself with grace. Makiyah wants people to take these matters with a grain of salt.
If she can talk to her teenage girl self, she would say “be kind to herself.” In our teenage years, we are our biggest critics. She states “teenage me with her braces and black lipstick had no idea how iconic she was.” We were all teens once, we were most likely uptight about ourselves but she emphasizes that one’s personality will take them farther.
Makiyah wants other women to learn that they are their biggest investment. She states “the relationship that you have with yourself is the most important.” She wants women to take control of their lives and to not let it pass them by. Makiyah wants women to know that investing in their brain, knowledge, makeup, looks, or whatever it may be is apart of putting themselves first.
On the topic of investment, Makiyah’s current lip combo is the Mac Lip Pencil in Cork, Charlotte Tilbury in the shade Kim K.W., topped with NARS Lip Gloss in the shade Turkish Delight.
Makiyah Michelle speaks with truth, volume, and paves the way for woman empowerment.
